SINGLE FELTING

The use of a single dryscreen (or dryer felt) in the first section of dryers. Lessens sheet flutter more than normal top and bottom felt design.

SIZE

A material which is added to paper to give it water-resisting properties. Can be rosin size added at the wet end or surface size (starch) added at the size press.

SIZE PRESS

(1) Two rolls forming a nip which contains liquid starch. The nip pressure forces starch into the paper as it passes through the starch and nip.
(2) Section of paper machine where surface treatments, such as a starch solution, are applied to the sheet of paper to give it special qualities.

SLABBING

The method of removing cull paper from a roll.

SLASH

A type of pine.

SLICE

The variable opening of the head box which the stock flows through to reach the wire.

SLIME

A biological growth or chemical deposit found in certain mill areas.

SLIMICIDE

A chemical additive that kills and controls the growth of slime.

SLIME SPOTS

(1)Spots or smears caused by fungi or bacteria growth.
(2) Semi-transparent spots produced in paper. They are caused by micro-organisms (plants or animals) which have grown in one of the many wet spots around the wet end of a paper machine. Eventually they may get into the paper on the wire. Although these spots are sterilized by the dryers, they are unsightly and may leave holes in the paper.

SLITTER

A sharp metal disc used to cut paper into desired widths on winder and rewinder.

SLUSH PULP

Dried pulp that is repulped at the dryer for paper machine furnish.

SMOOTHNESS

The texture of the surface of paper, also called its "finish".

SmoothTech

Steamshower for the on-line calender.

SNOWSTORM

Used to describe the appearance of paper with a wild, non-uniform formation.

SODA PULP

Pulp made from deciduous or broadleaf trees, such as poplar, by the soda process.

SODIUM CHLORIDE

NaCL used in starch make-up (salt).

SOFTWOOD

Term applied to trees of the needle-leaf types such as pine.

SOLENOID

A metallic core surrounded by an electric coil and caused to move by magnetism as the coil is electrically charged.

SOLIDS

The material in a water solution.

SPOOL

The metal cylinder which the paper reel is wound around.

SPREADER ROLL

A high crowned roll used to spread the paper web.

SQUIRTS

Nozzles on the front and back of the machine usually before the couch. They cut a strip of paper off the sheet edge by means of high-pressure water.

S-ROLL

Refers to swimming rolls. These rolls are controlled crown rolls.

STANDARD

An amount of material, labour, of other measurable entities used in the production of a given amount of pulp, paper, or finished goods based on historical records.

STARCH

(1) A powdered product derived from corn or other vegetables; used as a solution in water for internal or surface treatment of paper to improve its properties.
(2) Material which is used as a sizing for paper. Usually made from corn.

STATIC ELECTRICITY

Electrical charge which may exist in paper which has been improperly dried or has sustained excessive pressure in calendering. It is particularly apparent in paper which is too dry, but it can also exist in properly dried paper which has become affected by local atmospheric conditions after shipment.

SteamTech

Steamshower for the Fourdrinier or press section of a paper machine.

STEM TRAP

A mechanical device for separating steam from condensate in a pipe line.

STOCK
